The Special Education and Legal Team will cover the following topics: (1) Holding ARD meetings that will meet Federal & state requirements; (2) Creating IEPs to withstand legal challenges; and (3) Implementing the IEP likes it’s your JOB We will primarily focus on: • Preparing for an ARD meeting (notice, gathering data, internal communication, drafting documents, writing agenda); • ARD committee participants (mandatory v. discretionary participants, excusals, rules of engagement with advocates/attorneys); • Content of the ARD (required basic components with a focus on writing strong/ measurable goals; additional Texas requirements; what is NOT required; developing a BIP; making amendments to ARDs; common mistakes/what not to say in ARD meetings); • ARDs that end in disagreement (what is a reasonable v. unreasonable parent request; holding reconvene ARDs in compliance with law); • Overview of common IEP implementation errors (providing accommodations/services).
